About
“SAFU” became a meme in 2018, when CZ from Binance wrote “Funds are safe” on Twitter during an exchange maintenance period. Shortly after, a meme video by Bizonacci turned the phrase into “Funds are SAFU,” and it quickly went viral across the crypto community. Binance later embraced the term officially. In July 2018, it created the **Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU)**, an emergency fund financed with part of the exchange’s trading fees to help protect users in extreme situations. So, in short: **SAFU started as a meme version of “SAFE,” became strongly associated with CZ, and later became the official name of Binance’s user protection fund.**
